Listening to ecosystems in regions rich in animal life reveals soundscapes — inimitable compositions in which each element — living being, mammal, insect, meteorological phenomenon, topological formation, and so on — is linked to the others and, through the particular relationships that exist, is part of a macro-composition in perpetual movement. This is a constant framework for thinking about the potentialities of the relationships
between instruments, whether acoustic or electronic. These relationships may sometimes involve fusion, detachment (with particular spectral occupations), organicity, or contrast, each element occupying its own function and its own territory. Nothing is set in stone; everything can change according to what is being expressed at any given moment. The timbres of the violin and the cello naturally constitute a potential section. But the entrance of a saxophone might break the very idea of a section. Electronic timbres, especially from some analog synthesizers, can create the illusion of multi-plying the saxophone. In all of this, the digital processing of the three acoustic instruments sometimes further blurs the lines: who is doing what? The sound thus becomes a macro-organism in which each instrument may lose its borders.
Anaïs, Quentin, and Szuhwa are artists who have developed their own particular sounds, made up of a thousand details and expressions, recognizable beyond the musical languages they practice. The acoustic relationships that they form are based on the way in which they bring sounds to life; their ability to listen and express themselves is fundamental to this music.
